Some people take photos. Others tell stories. Marlana Semenza does both, and that is what has made working with her throughout my year as Miss North Carolina such a meaningful experience. From the very first moment we worked together, it was clear that Marlana’s goal was not just to capture what I looked like in the moment, but who I was, where I was headed, and the woman I was becoming.
One of the things that makes Marlana so special is the way she truly takes the time to get to know you. Before every shoot, during every session, and even while talking about your future, she listens with intention. She wants to understand your heart, your purpose, and your plans for life after the crown. In fact, only one of our photo shoots this year has even included my crown, because Marlana’s focus has never been limited to a title. Her focus is on setting you up visually and creatively for your next chapter, long after the crown is placed back in its box.
My journey with Marlana actually began long before I became Miss North Carolina. We first worked together in 2020, during the height of COVID. At a time when so much of the world felt uncertain, Marlana created something truly innovative by offering Zoom photo shoots tailored to your Community Service Initiative, talents, and personal interests. Even through a screen, she managed to bring out personality, purpose, and confidence. That experience stayed with me, and it made it even more special to reconnect years later during such an important season of my life.
Throughout this year, we have captured so many different facets of who I am. Our photo shoots have taken place in different parts of the state, each one reflecting a new setting, a new purpose, or a new season. Whether we are highlighting my work in the community, my growth as a leader, or simply who I am beyond the title, Marlana has an incredible gift for making every image feel authentic and intentional.
What I love most about working with Marlana is that she never rushes the process. She creates space for you to feel comfortable, confident, and seen. That is when the most powerful images are made, and it is why her work feels so personal. You are not just standing in front of a camera. You are being invited to step fully into who you are.
